Inviting the European Union to partner with India in automobile manufacturing and the auto component sector, Secretary, Department of Heavy Industry, B S Meena said that there is huge potential for the growth in these areas.
Meena said the huge potential for growth of the Indian automobile and the auto component sectors holds out tremendous possibilities for the EU-member states to partner and cooperate with India in areas such as automotive R&D, cleaner and environmentally friendly vehicular technologies, intelligent transport systems, inspection and maintenance, rapid and vehicular safety and frugal engineering.
However, the Secretary cautioned that the most important challenge is to ensure that this growth is accompanied by strategies aimed at mitigating the adverse impact of vehicles on the environment.
Addressing a FICCI Roundtable on 'India-EU Cooperation in Automotive Industry' in the national capital on Monday, Meena said, "The Government of India is very keen to encourage alternative fuels, drives and electric mobility, including hybrid vehicles, as also the manufacture of such vehicles in India."
He also said that the Government would soon set up an empowered mechanism to facilitate the roll out of a sustainable mobility plan that mitigates the impact of road transportation on the environment and lowers the dependence on fossil fuels.
Replying to Indian secretary's statement, Ambassador- Head of the Delegation of the European Union to India, Daniele Smadja said, "We are always open for cooperation in the area of Indian automobile and component industry. Not only the car industry, but also the auto component sector is also a very important sector for growth and have grate potential."
Georgette Lalis, European Commission's Director for Enterprise and Industry, said, "The EU was keen on close collaboration with India in the automotive and component sector within the framework of the 1958 agreement."
The European Commission, she added, is keen on finalising an informal cooperation agreement with India on international standards on automotive safety and environment & quality issues at the EU-India Summit in December at Brussels.
